The Art of Mi’kmaw Culture

Dr. Gerald R. Gloade is an Artist, Carver, Educator, Storyteller, Naturalist, Elder and Visionary. Now retired, Gerald was the Program Development Officer for the Mi’kmawey Debert Cultural Centre Project for the past 20 years.
From the First Nation Community of Millbrook, near Truro, Nova Scotia. Gloade was raised by his grandmother, the late Viney “Brooks” Gloade. He spent more time with her, than with other children his own age, and had a precious opportunity to learn traditional and ecological knowledge and skills through her stories. His grandmother, imparted to Gerald, the ways of the land, the history of people and communities, the skills to fish and hunt, and the legends of Kluskap. It was those Stories and Legends of Kluskap that
sparked the imagery captured in his Artwork.
This Exhibit features a few pieces of Gloade’s imagery, captured in both Contemporary styles, created in a digital environment of the Computer to the Indigenous style of the Mi’kmaw, and the Northeastern Woodland Style of Art.
This exhibition is on until March 14, 2026. Join us for the opening reception on January 22 from 5:30pm-7:30pm.
