Held in the Wake by Jennifer Coveyduc

Noticing, gathering, and learning from what the tide reveals, my work is shaped by the shoreline—by what is carried in, left behind, and quietly altered by time.

Using coastal materials and fiber-based processes, I work slowly and intuitively, allowing texture, colour, and form to guide each piece. I create intimate works that hold both beauty and responsibility, inviting reflection on our relationship with the natural world.

Framed compositions bring together seaweeds, shells, and organic fragments into small, contained landscapes. Arranged to echo their natural surroundings, these pieces celebrate intricacy and interdependence—reminders that nothing in nature exists in isolation. The longer one looks, the more there is to see: subtle colour shifts, layered forms, and delicate connections that mirror the living ecosystems around us.

Small circular weavings are formed within traditional wooden lobster trap rings. Worn scraps of discarded rope—shaped by labour and saltwater—are rewoven, transformed from waste, and given space to be seen differently. These works honour our maritime histories while gently drawing attention to abandonment and how our waste continues to affect fragile ocean ecosystems.

The heart of my work exists in a space between beauty and responsibility. I am drawn to making work that encourages care—pieces that foster appreciation as a first step toward stewardship.

Whether they evoke nostalgia, curiosity, or discovery, these works ask us to look closer, value what is often overlooked, recognize how deeply connected we are to the environments that sustain us, and acknowledge our shared responsibility to protect them.

This exhibition is on until March 14. Join us for an opening reception on January 22 from 5:30pm-7:30pm. Jennifer’s work is also featured in the glass cabinet next to the Small Gallery.
