Faces Following Me
The flash of a camera these days over shadows the artist skilled in developing the features of a subject in live mode. The photo used by many new artists ,sometimes with grid, makes them an instant artist. It appears to be irresistible rather than spend the time to develop the eye hand coordination of drawing what you see. This skill also comes with a developed ability to converse with the subject getting to know them while viewing a transformation of emotions relaxing into their true self. This, a further gift of recognition of human feelings for both the subject and the artist. And now with the advent of AI, anyone can claim to be an instant artist. For the trained artist already having developed over years and able to record from life the truth of emotion and being, it seems to be a lost art and weighs heavily with the lack of previous awe that acknowledged the work and dedication to a skill.
Portraits from life with some biography built in to the main facial feature is what I am presently working on. While all my work represents anatomy drawing ,painting ,sculpture and has been my forte from art school through my career. But I want to concentrate on getting their emotions from the sitter with this exhibit. I live with my work filling my home and its like living with other residents looking out at me under their eyes. Most of the portraits will be paintings with a few other mediums, and a few sculptures of faces. I have included as part of the exhibit my poetry which guides the viewer to the portrait emotion which I felt was the story of the model and want to share with the viewer.
This exhibition is installed until July 17.
About the artist
As a Nova Scotia-based artist, my creative journey spans over 65 years, marked by diverse experiences and explorations. Growing up as an Air Force child, I often felt unrooted until I found my true home in the Maritimes. This upbringing has given me a broad, open outlook on life and many cultural inspirations. I now live here with my husband, George, and we have nurtured a global perspective in our two children, who reside in other countries and travel the world for their work.
I am a multi-discipline atelier artist primarily focused on painting, but over time, I have explored various mediums to express my vision. My approach led me into sculpting, and I deeply enjoy the intimacy of these creative exchanges. I believe working with live models is a fundamental skill that every artist should develop, much like it’s taught as a basic in art schools. Similarly, I enjoy taking my art outdoors with plein air painting for the same reasons.
While I don’t have a single “favorite” medium, I find joy in any material that allows me to explore and express my concepts. Yet, at my core, I remain a painter, and that passion continues to dominate all my other artistic pursuits. My exploration has led me to drawing, firing bronze, welding steel, working with clay, and even experimenting in the wet lab like my photographer father. Now, I am venturing into the digital world with my poetry, aspiring to create a definitive graphic novel that captures my life’s work.
Beyond my personal work, I’ve also played a significant role in advancing the arts in my community through teaching, organizing, and supporting local art events
