Into the Forest: Where the Future Grows

Christine Whelan is a photographer and visual storyteller based in Meadowville, Nova
Scotia. Her work explores the relationship between children, nature, and the quiet, formative
moments that shape who we become. With over two decades of experience working with the
public, Christine brings a deep sensitivity to human emotion, connection, and lived
experience to her photographic practice.
Much of Christine’s recent work has emerged from her time at Pictou County Forest School,
where learning unfolds outdoors through curiosity, resilience, play, and relationship.
Immersed in this environment, she documents unguarded moments that arise when children
are given space to explore freely: muddy hands, shared problem-solving, and the calm
confidence that grows from belonging in the natural world. These photographs are not
staged or directed – they are observed with patience and respect, letting real moments speak
for themselves.
Christine’s visual style blends documentary realism with a poetic sensibility. She is drawn to
natural light, layered textures, and expressive details that tell bigger stories. At the heart of
her work is a belief that time spent in nature is not a luxury but a necessity – especially for
children growing up in a changing climate. By fostering familiarity, care, and joy in outdoor
spaces, she hopes these early experiences will help shape future adults who feel connected
to the earth and motivated to protect it.
Into the Forest: Where the Future Grows is both a celebration and an invitation. It
encourages viewers to slow down, remember their relationship with the natural world, and
consider the future we are growing when children learn, play, and belong among the trees.
This exhibition is on until May 17. Join us for an opening reception January 22 from 5:30-7:30pm.
