Wild Roots: Fantasy, Nature, and Healing

Born in Ontario, this self taught artist, Ashley Farrell has been creating art throughout her life guided by an enduring passion for self-expression and visual storytelling. After moving to Pictou, Nova Scotia three years ago, she had a transformative return to her artistic journey. Finding inspiration and peace from the world around her, this rediscovery was rooted in reflection, emotion, and personal healing. Wildlife and nature sit at the core of her focus as she captures the spirit and presence of animals, while exploring fantasy inspired designs that blend imagination with organic forms. Known for her bold, contrasting colours and strong singular focus, Ashley’s body of work spans a range of mediums, from acrylics to coloured pencil. Her continually evolving practice has recently expanded into pyrography, where wood-burning techniques have added depth, texture, and warmth to her creative designs. Each piece you witness is created from the inside out – reflecting healing, resilience, and personal evolution.

This exhibit offers a glimpse into the more personal side of my artist journey. While wildlife and nature have always been at the heart of my work, this collection explores the deeper emotional connections that exist between the natural world, imagination, and personal growth. Many of these works were created during a period of deep reflection and discovery, following my move to Nova Scotia, and my return to a dedicated creative practice. Each piece represents a moment in that journey, capturing the quiet strength found in perseverance, self-discovery, and connection to the world around us. Wild Roots invites viewers to slow down, reflect and find their own stories within the images. It is a celebration of imagination, the restorative power of nature, and the healing that can emerge when we grant the ability to reconnect with ourselves.
