Becoming a Film Town: Economic Development Forum for Artists
LOCATION: deCoste Culture Hub

Dive into a full day of panels, presentations, and breakout sessions with film industry professionals like Barrie Dunn, Jenna MacMillan, Michelle Harris and Lydia Sayeau. Learn what it takes to attract productions, elevate local talent, and turn your town into a creative hub.
We’ll also hear about running a rural film festival from Lori Lynch, Janet Doble (Parrsboro Film Festival), and Clint Ward (Hudson Film Festival).
Panels and conversations will be moderated by Solomon Nagler, Media Arts Professor at NSCAD University.

Join us for the screening of The Last Repair Shop – 2024 Academy Award® winner for Best Short Documentary, co-directed and produced by Nova Scotia’s own Ben Proudfoot. Also enjoy powerful short films by local youth, created through programming at the Pictou Library and a team from NSCAD who will be working with youth from New Glasgow Academy earlier in the week.
A fireside chat will take place with Clint, Lori and Janet as they share insights on running rural film festivals and getting your film noticed.

SUNDAY, JUNE 8th
Intro to Film Making in NS with Kevin Fraser
LOCATION: Creative Pictou County Studio | 99 Water Street, Pictou
This workshop is aimed at those who don’t currently work in the film industry but are curious about the possibility of doing so. This introductory workshop will provide an overview of many of the departments and job positions that exist within the film industry. You will learn a little bit about the responsibilities of those roles, gain insight into the different types and scales of production happening in Nova Scotia and also discuss some practical suggestions for how to go about starting a career in the film industry.
Speaker Bios
Jenna MacMillan is an award-winning filmmaker and owner of Club Red Productions, the leading independent film and television company on Prince Edward Island. Previously, she was the Director of Production and Development for Northwood Entertainment (ANNE WITH AN E THE GRIZZLIES). Jenna recently produced the PEI feature thriller, A SMALL FORTUNE (levelFILM) which has been sold around the world and her latest feature film, WHO’S YER FATHER? released theatrically in Canada in 2023, continues to screen across the country and is available on Paramount + in Canada. Who’s Yer Father? was the second most successful Canadian comedy feature of 2023. Jenna received Telefilm’s Talent To Watch Funding for her feature directorial debut, THE SNAKE – the only narrative project to be selected in Atlantic Canada. It’s set to go to camera in May, 2025. Jenna is a graduate of Toronto Metropolitan University’s Film Production program and was the recipient of the DGC-Ontario & WIFT-T Directing mentorship award, DGC Atlantic’s Making Waves award for trailblazing community efforts and WIFT AT’s Filmmaker of the Year.
Barrie Dunn is a film /TV producer, writer, director, and lawyer. After spending 15 years at the helm of Trailer Park Productions, Barrie founded Pictou Twist Pictures where he oversees the development and production of the company projects with its many partners. Barrie has produced some of Canada’s most successful television programs and feature films. He was a co – creator, writer and producer of the hit series, Trailer Park Boys, and produced three commercially successful feature films based on the franchise.
Parsborro Film Festival
Lori has been involved in promoting Parrsboro and area since 1997 when she and her husband became Innkeepers. As a tourism operator, Lori served on many Boards and committees with the objective of promoting the region, such as Central Nova Tourism Association, Parrsboro’s Sustainable Tourism committee, Parrsboro and District Board of Trade and the Bay of Fundy Tourism Partnership.
Lori has been on the Board of the Parrsboro Band Association since 2008, serving ten years as Chair and was on the Board of Parrsboro Creative. Lori is one of the founders of the Parrsboro Film Festival, which is celebrating fifteen years in 2025 and is committee chair of Films for All at the Hall, the local film society.
Short Film Coordinator | Parrsboro Film Festival
Since moving to Nova Scotia in 1993, Janet has always been active in the arts community. While living in Halifax she was involved with numerous arts organizations and air projects. Her passion for promoting community arts has found a new outlet since moving to Parrsboro in 2017. She currently sits on the board for the Parrsboro Film Festival as Secretary and is the short film coordinator.
Founder of the Hudson Film Festival
Clint Ward as President of the Hudson Film Society has 20 years of experience presenting films of all kinds to enthusiastic audiences. The HFS has worked out of Hudson’s unique converted railway station Theatre since 2006 presenting their, “Monday at The Movies” series as well as a yearly film festival. The festival has grown from separate weekend events, one featuring dramatic films and the other documentaries to being combined in 2016 to a single 6 day Festival featuring Canadian Films only. This year’s event will be a 10th anniversary of continued presentations of the Festival Experience to audiences from Western Quebec and Eastern Ontario, now known as The BIG little CANADIAN FILM FESTIVAL.

Lydia Sayeau is a dynamic entrepreneur, creative strategist, and community builder with more than two decades of experience in visual storytelling and brand development. As Co-Founder and CEO of New Brooklyn Media (NBM)—and the driving force behind BRAEVR, NBM’s immersive division—Lydia leads with a rare combination of creative insight, operational precision, and a deep-rooted passion for helping organizations tell their stories in meaningful, impactful ways.
With a background in photography and graphic design, Lydia’s career spans agency, nonprofit, and tech sectors in both Halifax and Toronto. Her ability to blend visual creativity with strategic thinking has been a cornerstone of NBM’s reputation for delivering work that’s bold, thoughtful, and rooted in real connection.
Known for her calm leadership style and people-first approach, Lydia is the kind of CEO who’s just as invested in the process as she is in the outcome. Whether she’s guiding a brand refresh, leading an interactive storytelling initiative, or exploring the latest in immersive tech, she brings a spirit of collaboration, curiosity, and clarity to every project.
Professor of Media Arts at NSCAD University
Solomon is a filmmaker and teaches at the NSCAD University in Halifax. His work has been screened at film festival across the globe. He is co-founder of The Community Mobile Media Lab, a purpose-designed mobile media production hub, which will house film production equipment that can be situated temporarily in Nova Scotia Communities across the province to explore innovative models of co-creation, training and mentorship.
He co-edited Sculpting Cinema (2018), a book that examines the evolution of the cinematic language of expanded cinema as conceptualized through architecture, gallery spaces and public art projects. He is also co-editor of Landscape of Moving Image; Prairie Artists Cinema (2020), documenting artists’ practices and independent film histories from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. His first book of poetry, piyyut, was published by Nevermore Press in 2025.

Lydia Sayeau, Co-Founder and CEO of New Brooklyn Media with its immersive division BRAEVR, will explore how immersive storytelling can deepen audience connection and drive real-world impact. Lydia will share how New Brooklyn Media is helping clients use immersive video experiences to build authentic relationships with their audiences, experiences that are transparent, engaging, and accessible across web, mobile, and VR platforms.
